ASC offers two Level 2 courses in mathematics - Mathematics and Statistics. Students can enrol in both.
These courses have the flexibility to meet the goals of students with a wide range of backgrounds
and ambitions in mathematics. Some students are looking for 8 Level 2 maths credits and mastery of basic skills
to qualify them for an apprenticeship. Others are looking toward university study in the physical sciences.
We expect that 'Networks' and 'Co-ordinate Geometry' will be completed by most students in Year 10 or 11
Year 12 students will have the opportunity to complete one or more of the Level 3 linear programming,
critical paths, systems of equations, and inference internals.
We expect that students looking to have calculus as a UE subject will focus on the three Level 2 external examinations (including probability) in Year 11. The background needed is the ability to find the formula of a straight line, the ability to factorise, expand and sketch quadratics (parabolas), the ability to change the subject of a formula, skills in manipulating fractions, and some trigonometry (Pythagorus and SOH CAH TOA). For these students a full Year 11 course in mathematics will be the three Level 2 externals, Graphical Methods, and Systems of Equations. Those who work through this quickly might choose to complete one or more of the Level 3 internals.
